Caterpillar's data center narrative is unchanged, and the stock getting smoked is deserved after its roughly one-third drop.
Weiss sold Caterpillar and says its narrative has not changed; it is a bet on data center demand. The stock is down about a third from where he sold it and got smoked the day before, which he says is what should happen. He reads the drop as the market reacting to the data center cycle turning.
“look, I sold Caterpillar. Caterpillar's narrative hasn't changed... It's the data center narrative. Stock's down more than a third or roughly a third from where I sold it... It got smoked as it should have.”at 9:40

Michael Khouw · Optimize AdvisorsBullish
Caterpillar's deep selloff makes it a stock to start kicking the tires on.
Khouw says Caterpillar is in deep bear market territory, far below its all-time highs, and that it had been getting a boost on potential construction spend tied to the AI trade. He thinks it had gotten a little frothy near the top, and now the market is shooting first and asking questions later. For those reasons he likes the name and sees it as a place to start looking.
“I kinda like Caterpillar and I view this as maybe a place that I would start to kick the tires because I think it had gotten a little frothy up there at the top.”at 34:00

Tami Zakaria · JPMorganBullish
Caterpillar's order growth will normalize, but capacity ramp for power equipment over several years supports a $1,100 target.
Zakaria says Caterpillar's results were in line with guidance, but investors wanted a bigger beat because they doubt AI investment growth. She argues that orders growing about 60% a quarter on average over the past four quarters are bound to normalize given the company's size. The key is execution and ramping capacity, with management tripling engine capacity and more than doubling turbine capacity over the next several years. Backlog hit a record $78B. She keeps an overweight rating and $1,100 price target.
“one needs to take into account the law of large numbers. A company of Caterpillar's size has been growing orders at a 60% clip on average over the past four quarters. So these order numbers would eventually normalize”at 23:16

Caterpillar could fall further as euphoric money unwinds, not because of credit problems.
Tim says Caterpillar and GE Vernova aren't expensive companies. The stock could fall because money has been euphoric in these names, not because of credit problems. He notes the Caterpillar chart could go to 600 or Vernova could, and that Caterpillar could certainly go lower. He thinks the adjustment is appropriate.
“it's not because they're expensive companies with credit problems. It's just where the money has been euphoric,”at 4:29

Jay Woods · Freedom Capital MarketsBullish
Caterpillar's fundamentals are intact despite the technical breakdown, and Woods is already building a position.
Woods is concerned about the technical breakdown in Caterpillar. Fundamentally, though, the story hasn't changed much and the earnings are still there, so he sees opportunity. He has already started buying into the position and is feeling the pain as the longer-term uptrend broke down. He believes it is a place to put money to work over time.
“I've already limped into that trade, and I'm feeling it a little bit as it broke down that longer term uptrend, but I still believe over time, we're gonna look back and say, this is where we wanna put money to work.”at 46:55

Caterpillar trades at about 40x on cyclical earnings that are not trough levels; the fund is short.
The fund is short Caterpillar. The stock trades around 40x. Earnings may not be at a peak, but they are not trough levels either. He expects an extended growth period, but not one lasting six to eight years. He thinks it will be about three or four years, and the stock is priced for much longer growth on a cyclical business.
“we're short Caterpillar. Like, I'm sorry, the stocks at 40 times. They may not be peak earnings, but they ain't trough earnings.”at 54:00
