Moderna is ahead of itself on biotech momentum but deserves the rally long term.

Weiss owns Moderna as a big position. He says the stock is ahead of itself and rising mainly on momentum in the biotech trade, which he calls a play by people chasing a different sector than data centers. He still thinks it deserves the move at the end game because of its 39-drug and vaccine pipeline.

“it's ahead of itself, and I own it. It's a big position, but it's just momentum of the biotech trade that keeps driving it.”at 31:14

Moderna's pipeline of 39 vaccines and drugs and strong Keytruda combination results make the future bright.

Weiss doesn't care much about the upcoming quarter but says the excitement around Moderna is palpable after a dinner with CEO Stéphane Bancel. The company has 39 vaccines and drugs in its pipeline, and the results of the Keytruda combination were fantastic. He calls the future bright.

“I don't really care that much about the quarter... the excitement's just palpable. They've got 39 vaccines and drugs in the pipeline... The results that came out on the Keytruda combination were just fantastic.”at 28:49

  • Jim Cramer · CNBCNeutral

Moderna is a terrific company, but after its parabolic rally Cramer would wait for the stock to pull back.

Cramer says he likes Moderna and calls it a terrific company, but says the stock has risen so much that it is starting to come back down. He cites a J&J drug win that barely moved that stock, and says he wants to see how the stock trades before buying. He adds that Moderna had a parabolic move and that he does not buy parabolic moves. The view is a wait-and-see stance on timing, not a rejection of the company.

“I like Moderna. I think it's a terrific company. But the stocks are up so much that I really have to feel that... it's starting to come back down... It had a parabolic move. We don't buy parabolic moves.”at 8:18

Moderna sold off on sell-the-news; melanoma vaccine data approvable but missed investors' de-risking expectations.

The Merck–Moderna melanoma cancer vaccine [intismeran] looks approvable, but investors expected results that were unequivocally great and would de-risk the later kidney, bladder and lung cancer trials. The results did not support that, so the stock sold the news, most visibly in Moderna and to a lesser degree in Merck.

“the new drug, [intismeran], looks approvable, but I think investors are really expecting it to look unequivocally great and to be de risked into looking at kidney cancer and bladder cancer and lung cancer. The results didn't quite support that.”at 38:00

  • Oliver Renick · CNBCUncertain

Moderna's put-heavy options flow looks like a needed shakeout of speculative bulls, with a rebound likely by Friday.

Renick says Moderna traded more than seven times its 30-day average volume, with puts outpacing calls. Seven of the top 10 most-bought contracts were puts, including 15,000 in-the-money 200-strike puts. Implied volatility fell and sat only slightly above realized volatility, which he reads as a shakeout of speculative bulls chasing the rally. Some traders are buying calls at the $2.50 strike expiring Friday, betting the sell-off reverses by then.

“Implied volatility in Moderna actually went down today and only slightly above the stock's realized volatility, suggesting this might just be a needed shakeout of speculative bulls who had been chasing the rally.”at 36:53

Moderna's relative strength and momentum are strong, so he would not fade or short it.

Carter says relative strength and momentum are among the most widely tested factors, and Moderna has both after a massive run. Idiosyncratic winners and losers are normal in biotech, but he respects the price action. He would not fade or short the stock.

“of all the factors that have ever been tested... everyone knows relative strength and momentum. If this has both, I would not fade it, and I wouldn't short it.”at 22:46
