Market is structurally worse than the index suggests; stretched defensives can fall too.
Carter says the S&P is only down 3% but under the surface it is worse, because rotation keeps the index flat while stocks such as Caterpillar, semiconductors and Google fall. The money rotating into staples, healthcare and Procter and Gamble has left those names stretched, so they are worse off. He also says healthcare is playing catch-up after being at 25-year relative lows versus the S&P in June, and that will likely continue.
“I mean, the S and P is down 3% from its high. Yes, internally it's incredible. But structurally it's worse.”at 19:09

Overweight energy but sell refiners, which are overdone; integrated majors look best.
Carter would be overweight energy, but he thinks refiners are overdone and would get out of them. The big integrated companies look best. He notes energy is up almost 60% this year yet is still only 3.9% of the S&P, which matters for the economy and jobs but not much for the index.
“I would be overweight energy and then the question is the refiners, those are overdone and I would get out of those. And the oil services. So it is the big integrators that look the best.”at 26:03

AlphabetBearish
Alphabet broke down on a well-defined pattern; do not step in while it is still falling.
Carter says the stock fell about 13% this week on heavy turnover of roughly 140 million shares and broke down on a well-defined pattern. He argues weakness is foreshadowed in preceding price action, and that stocks like Alphabet were weak for months beforehand. He advises waiting for the dust to settle rather than buying.
“It broke down on a well defined pattern... it's usually better to let the dust settle. I would not step in here”at 33:45

AppleBearish
Apple's strong relative strength may end in profit-taking; sell calls and trim.
Worth reads Apple's chart in two ways. Relative strength against falling peers is impressive, but the stock could still follow other names into profit-taking or an earnings-related drop. Given that risk, he would at least sell calls against longs and is inclined to trim the position.
“I would, at a minimum, sell calls against longs, but I'd be inclined to trim as well.”at 46:18

Meta PlatformsBullish
Meta's pullback leaves it at a level with high rebound potential after its big run-up.
Carter notes Meta rose from about 5.25 in July to 7.75 before the recent sell-off. That means the 18% drop over three to four weeks is a pullback, not a broken chart. He concludes the current level offers high rebound potential.
“So this pullback actually leaves it at a level where rebound potential is high.”at 6:46

Market weakness is narrow; the index hinges on a few megacaps that could drag it lower.
Carter points out that small caps, mid caps, the Russell 2000, transports and the Dow were all up while the S&P fell. He says this is because the S&P is so heavily weighted to a few big names. If those names stumble, as they have for a long time, the broader market stumbles. He also notes industrials are down nine of the past ten weeks, showing crosscurrents.
“it was very isolated, the weakness. The S and P small cap index was up. The S and P four hundred mid cap was up... It is just because the S and P is so heavy in a few big names. And if those big names stumble and it's been this way for a long time, the market stumbles.”at 6:53

Stay away from semis; they are following gold's pattern of steep run, epic giveback, weak bounce.
Carter says the group has been pushed steeply higher over one to three years with a lot of money flowing in. He compares it to precious metals and gold, which saw an epic giveback, then a small bounce, then rolled over again. He says that pattern means semis won't recover quickly, so he would not be involved. He sees some idiosyncratic weak tech names starting to bottom, but not semis.
“It's a stay away from me... you get an epic, equally epic giveback. Think of precious metals, gold, think of semis. And then you get a little bit of a bounce... It doesn't recover quickly. I don't like it.”at 12:22

American Express CompanyBearish
American Express is lagging with bearish price-volume and poor relative strength.
Carter says neither the lagging names nor the stretched names are desirable. American Express is lagging with bearish price-volume correlation and poor relative strength. He sees a weak technical setup for the stock.
“[American Express] and Capital One lagging, bearish price volume correlation, poor relative strength.”at 26:08

MastercardBearish
Mastercard is stretched far above trend, so he would fade it.
Carter says Visa and Mastercard are good but too good. They have been huge laggards that played catch up as a flight to safety, and now they are stretched far above trend. He would fade them.
“So Visa and Mastercard stretched far above trend and I would fade them.”at 26:17

Williams-SonomaBullish
Williams-Sonoma is a stay-long; its three-year performance matches Ralph Lauren's.
Carter notes Williams-Sonoma has the same three-year performance as Ralph Lauren, and they are in a dead heat. Because of that chart strength he says to stay long and be long the stock. He points out Tapestry has beaten both by a wide margin on the same measure.
“it's a stay long, be long. You know, interesting, the exact same three year performance as Ralph Lauren, they are in a dead heat.”at 31:25

VanEck Oil Services ETFBullish
Oil services ETF OIH is set to rebound and outperform the integrated-oil XLE on convergence.
OIH has been terrible, and Worth argues it is a laggard against Exxon and Chevron, which are now extended. OIH's six-month underperformance versus XLE, a 2,700 basis point spread, has happened only about seven times in thirty years, so he expects convergence. On the chart, OIH held its prior intermediate low through the recent selloff, so he sees it moving higher. He frames it as both an absolute trade and a relative trade against XLE.
“Second and final iteration of this particular ETF chart. I think you play higher here.”at 36:31

AI-themed ETFs are slumping, so bulls must now defend buying with the burden of proof shifted.
Worth says the AI-titled ETFs all share the same chart, a strong run followed by a collapse, and they are now slumping. Because AI was a very bullish area of the market, the burden of proof has shifted. Anyone who remains bullish or is buying more now has to defend that judgment.
“It's the burden of proof has shifted... anyone who remains bullish or is buying more has to defend that judgment.”at 44:28

NVIDIABullish
Nvidia's three-week selloff has reached its rising 150-day moving average, a buy signal.
Worth points to a three-week selloff in Nvidia that has fallen to a rising 150-day moving average. He reads that technical support as the point to buy the stock.
“NVIDIA three week sell off to the penny to a rising hundred and fifty day moving average. Buy it.”at 47:05
