American Express's 9% revenue growth roughly matches expense growth, with perks spend under scrutiny.
Eisen says the quarter's numbers are strong but depend on what you look at. Revenue grew about 9% and expenses grew about 9%. Perks, benefits and marketing spend used to attract additional revenue are what is being called under scrutiny. She notes Visa and Mastercard are processors that don't take on the same creditor underwriting risk as Amex.
“What I really focused on was a 9% revenue growth versus a roughly 9% expense growth. And as you mentioned, all of the perks and benefits”at 24:03

American Express has asymmetric downside; the beat came from lower provisions and SMB spend is uncertain.
Tim says the quarter had nothing extraordinary, and part of the beat came from a smaller provision. Small and medium-sized business spend remains very uncertain. He sees asymmetric downside relative to the fundamentals and says there is nothing that makes him need to own Amex. He also ties the stock's chart to net worth in the stock market at the top of the K-shaped economy.
“Part of the beat was because of less of a provision. Small to medium sized business spend is still something that's very uncertain. I think you have asymmetric downside here relative to the fundamentals.”at 25:31

American Express is lagging with bearish price-volume and poor relative strength.
Carter says neither the lagging names nor the stretched names are desirable. American Express is lagging with bearish price-volume correlation and poor relative strength. He sees a weak technical setup for the stock.
“[American Express] and Capital One lagging, bearish price volume correlation, poor relative strength.”at 26:08

Josh Brown · Ritholtz Wealth ManagementBullish
A good AmEx print could extend the financials rally, given strong high-end consumer and business spending.
Brown says AmEx's report tomorrow matters because of consumer spending and business spending. Expectations are for about $20B in revenue, up 9% year over year. If AmEx delivers that, with the usual performance, the high-end consumer looks good. He adds that Capital One's strong report two days earlier helps the case. If AmEx matches what he expects, there could be follow-through to the financials rally.
“They're expected to do 20,000,000,000 in revenue for the quarter, which would be a 9% increase year over year. If they can do that and the usual, the consumer looks good from our end.”at 49:16

American Express getting mauled is the meaningful consumer warning, since it reflects top and middle of the K-shaped consumer.
Within consumer discretionary he treats most weakness (McDonald's, Home Depot, Pepsi) as idiosyncratic or rate-driven, but American Express getting mauled, along with Walmart and TJ Maxx, is the warning that matters. Brown agrees it reflects the top of the K and much of the middle of the K, making it a better signal than Home Depot given the known housing weakness.
“Amex. That's screaming. American Express is an important stock, and it's getting mauled.”at 51:28

American Express is one of Whalen's favorites; it managed bond duration correctly through COVID.
Whalen says the big banks, including American Express, one of his favorites, got the securities book right. They understood that the Fed's COVID-era policy was temporary and so avoided the duration trap that caught Schwab and Bank of America. This is the reason he holds American Express in high regard.
“all the big guys, American Express, one of my favorites... they all got this right because they knew that what the Fed did during COVID was temporary.”at 6:37
