Wells Fargo is undervalued at 1.5x book and should catch up over the next couple of quarters.

She is buying more after a strong quarter. The stock is down 11% year to date despite progress after the asset cap lift. She argues the ROTCE targets of 7 to 18% are not aggressive and the bank can do better. Guidance for net interest income was better than she expected, and net interest margins expanded for the first time in several quarters. At 1.5 times book the stock is a value and a laggard that should play catch-up.

“I think the stock at 1.5 times book, Scott, is... It's a value here, and I... It's just a bit of laggard, and I just think it's gonna play catch up over the next couple of quarters.”at 28:05

Link is adding to Wells Fargo after a very good quarter.

Link says she is adding to financials and points to Wells Fargo's very good quarter as the reason. She sees financials as part of a broader rally beyond AI. Her case rests on the quarterly result, with no further detail.

“I'm also adding to financials. Wells Fargo, they had a very good quarter.”at 20:19

  • Steve Eisman · The Real Eisman PlaybookBearish

Wells Fargo is not the large bank to buy; its revenue has stalled and it keeps missing.

Wells Fargo beat on earnings with EPS of $1.87 against $1.66, up 13%, but missed on revenue, which rose only 2% year over year. Eisman says Wells has not grown revenue in multiple quarters and seems to miss every other quarter or so. With returns on tangible common equity of 12% to 16% and a valuation of 1.2 to 1.8 times tangible book, he says it is not the large bank he would look at if he were investing in one.

“Revenue missed. Total revenue was up only 2% versus last year. In fact, Wells has not grown revenue in multiple quarters. ... If you were interested investing in a large bank this is not the one I would look at.”at 20:48

Wells Fargo's turnaround is beginning after a solid quarter, and the stock is very cheap.

Link bought Wells Fargo after it reported earnings. She judged the quarter solid and said the turnaround is definitely beginning. She also says the stock is very cheap, which is the basis for her buying.

“So I bought after they reported earnings. I thought it was a solid quarter. The turnaround is definitely beginning, and the stock is very cheap.”at 51:05

  • Jim Cramer · CNBCBullish

Wells Fargo's stock pullback is a buying opportunity; net interest margin is stabilising.

Cramer's charitable trust owns Wells Fargo and he upgraded it after the drop. Revenue missed, but EPS beat by 2 cents, and net interest margin stabilised and came in slightly higher than expected after missing estimates for nine of the past ten quarters. The efficiency ratio improved to 63% from 65%. He says the CEO's bank is set up to do better in a higher-rate environment, and he believes him.

“I think we're getting a viable pullback here, which is why we just upgraded Wells Fargo for the Charitable Trust.”at 17:09

Wells Fargo's NII is stabilizing and loans grew 11%, making it a better opportunity than BofA.

Wells Fargo's headline quarter was soft mainly because of taxes, and pre-provision net revenue was a bit softer, but the core earnings beat. The key to the stock is stabilizing net interest income and margin, and that has improved. NIM grew 2.4 basis points, after falling 13 basis points in the first quarter and 4 in the second, and guidance for NIM was good. With NII stabilizing, the focus shifts to growth: average loans grew 11% in commercial and industrial, credit card and auto, with expenses in line. She is adding to the position.

“Net interest income also is stabilizing. And so now you can focus on growth. ... the average loans grew 11% in C and I, credit card and auto.”at 11:34

  • Jim Cramer · CNBCBullish

Wells Fargo was unfairly punished; its growth, expenses and rate-sensitive outlook make it a winner.

Banks sold off despite strong earnings, and Cramer argues Wells Fargo should have been a winner. CEO Charlie Sharf set up the bank to earn much more if rates rise, and gave a good view of next year. Cramer says Wells has good growth and excellent expenses, and he expects rates to rise next year because the Fed won't get inflation under control. He thinks the market has not recognized this.

“I'd argue that Wells Fargo should have been winner, not a loser.”at 2:50

Wells Fargo's turnaround under Scharf and the lifted asset cap let it grow; bullish.

Wells Fargo has to get going this quarter. CEO Charlie Scharf has done a good job turning a big ship around, and now that the asset cap has been lifted, the bank is free to grow. He wants to see how much growth it delivers, and treats its story as a turnaround that is now underway.

“Wells Fargo, they sorta gotta get going at this... I mean, [Charles Scharf's] done good job. Big ship to turn. He's turned it. Now the cap is lifted. Now they're free to grow.”at 20:57

  • Jim Cramer · CNBCBullish

Wells Fargo trades near 10x next-year earnings and is ready to roll on growth and margins.

Cramer says Wells Fargo has been clubbed lately, but the stock sells at just over 10 times next year's earnings estimates, which makes it one of the cheapest stocks. He expects growth and better net interest margin, and believes the CEO is ready to deliver. The stock is a CNBC investing club holding.

“yet I believe that this stock, another CNBC investing club name, is truly ready to roll.”at 3:35

Wells Fargo should have a very good quarter as net interest margins have bottomed.

Link says the stock has lagged, and she expects a very good quarter because net interest margins have bottomed. She also expects better profitability targets from the bank.

“I actually think they're gonna have a very good quarter. I think net interest margins have bottomed. The stock has lagged, and I expect better profitability targets as well.”at 45:31
