JPMorgan is the best bank to own; its premium valuation is earned if the economy and AI buildout hold.

If the economy stays fine and the AI infrastructure buildout continues, financials will benefit. Within financials, JPMorgan is the best of the group, and although it trades at a premium, Lebenthal argues the premium is deserved.

“If you believe that the AI build out is going to continue, then financials are gonna benefit, period. And if you're gonna own financials, as with any industry, you gotta own the best of the bunch, and that is JPMorgan. I know it sells at a premium. It sells at a premium for a reason.”at 37:03

JPMorgan's earnings resilience should let it outperform European banks in a long-short pair trade.

European financials have run far ahead of US ones since the Liberation Day lows. The EUFN European financials ETF is up about 57% versus about 27% for the US financial sector through XLF, more than twice the gain. Ceresna links this to Gave's argument that France's fiscal and political problems, expensive energy and limited policy room could spread through Europe's financial system, hitting funding costs, credit quality and the sustainability of recent earnings growth. He recommends a dollar-neutral pair, long JPMorgan and short Deutsche Bank at about 10.3 Deutsche shares per JPMorgan share. The trade rests on JPMorgan's earnings resilience against Deutsche's exposure to a harder European environment. He notes the pair still carries company and market risk, and suggests an optional call overlay to cap the short leg's losses.

“So in this trade, we're expressing a preference for JPMorgan's earnings resilience against Deutsche Bank's exposure to more challenging European environment.”at 1:17:29

JPMorgan's asset management business, with about $5T in assets, is a juggernaut that has grown into a behemoth.

The standout number in JPMorgan's results was about $5 trillion in asset management assets. Michael recalls the bank launching its ETF business around 2017-2018 with short-term bond funds, which seemed odd then. Nearly a decade later, he says the unit has become a juggernaut and an absolute behemoth, and he gives the bank credit for it.

“And here we are nearly a decade later, and it's a juggernaut. It's an absolute behemoth of a business, so credit to them.”at 26:57

JPMorgan's raised net interest income guidance shows higher rates are a net tailwind for banks.

JPMorgan's net interest income guidance came in above previous expectations, and the full-year NII expectation was raised. Banks are making more money from higher short and long rates than analysts assumed as recently as January. Higher rates cut both ways: they can strain some borrowers and project funding, but they widen the lending tailwind for banks. Josh concludes that bank earnings were good to very good.

“So if you're a bank investor, higher rates cut both ways. They might create a problem with some debt or some funding of projects, but they also create a tailwind on these banks lending businesses.”at 31:50

JPMorgan is using AI productivity to enter SMB M&A, enabled by single-banker deal teams, a segment once uneconomical.

Stengel highlights JP Morgan's announced push into M&A for small and mid-sized businesses as an example of using AI productivity strategically. Deal fees in that segment were previously too small to justify large staffing, but a banker acting as a 'deal team of one' makes it viable.

“JP Morgan just announced that they're gonna try and do a lot more m and a work for SMBs. For parts of the market that before they didn't think it made sense to go out and serve cause the deal fees were probably too small”at 33:27
