Alibaba is a great trade: cheap valuation, a clear level to trade from, and China's no-new-stock stance.

Brian sees Alibaba as a great trade because there is a clear level to measure against, such as last week's low or the June low. Its business model differs from US players: it gives away its model for free and charges customers to rent server space. Valuations are low, and China has said it won't issue more stock and wants its market to go up, which he calls a macro tailwind.

“No, I think it's a great trade here in Alibaba because you've got something to shoot against... They're giving away the model for free and you've to rent their server space.”at 26:36

Alibaba is incredibly cheap; long for years, though it is now cash-flow negative.

Finerman says she has held Alibaba for a long time, buying it at both lower and higher prices. She calls it incredibly cheap. She notes a caveat: like the hyperscalers' focus on AI, Alibaba is now cash-flow negative, which tempers the valuation argument.

“I've been [long] BABA for a long time, from lower, from higher. It's incredibly cheap. Although, just like the hyperscalers here, the focus on AI, they're also now cash flow negative.”at 31:56

Alibaba's Qwen model secretly uploading data to its servers makes enterprise trust in it very hard to win back.

Qwen, Alibaba's model, was found calling Alibaba servers in China and Singapore and uploading data despite saying it did not. He thinks it is probably a training error rather than a deliberate backdoor, but says that doesn't matter to enterprise security teams. He adds that the government could exploit or take over such a channel, and that Alibaba said nothing publicly.

“[Qwen's] existing model was calling to Alibaba servers, both in China and in Singapore, pinging them and uploading data to them when it said it wasn't.”at 23:42

  • Rob Sechan · NewEdge WealthBullish

Alibaba's valuation is reasonable; monetizing its cloud and e-commerce is the open question.

Sechan's fund bought Alibaba in December 2023 and still holds it, up about 50%. He concedes it has given a lot back. Alibaba faces the same capital-intensity concerns as the rest of the sector. It has a growing cloud business and a dominant e-commerce business, so the key question is whether it can monetize them. He argues that the valuation is much more reasonable.

“They're suffering from the same capital intensity concerns that you're seeing across the enterprise. They do have a growing cloud business and a dominant ecommerce business.”at 44:41

Alibaba is a rare competitive AI tech stack, bought at about 14x earnings.

The manager argues that China is probably the only other competitive tech stack for AI in the world. Investors can buy companies like Alibaba at about 14 times earnings, which the manager sees as an attractive entry point. This makes China's AI exposure worth holding in a portfolio at this stage.

“you're probably getting the only other competitive tech stack for AI in the world, and you're buying it at sort of 14 times earnings for companies like Alibaba.”at 48:32

  • Thomas J. Hayes · Great Hill CapitalBullish

Alibaba is the cheapest AI player; its unpriced stakes in AI startups like Moonshot are undervalued.

Hayes says Alibaba owns equity in almost every AI startup in Asia. Its roughly one-third stake in Moonshot, which is reportedly going public at a $50 billion valuation, implies about $15 billion of equity value that is not priced into Alibaba stock, and that is one of dozens of such holdings that could list. He also cites Alibaba as the number one compute provider in Asia, with the lowest relative multiple, the healthiest balance sheet, and AI revenue growing triple digits for over ten quarters. He calls it a free call option on the Chinese middle-class recovery.

“we have a company called Alibaba, which is the cheapest AI player in the world. They own equity in pretty much every AI startup in Asia. One of them is called Moonshot, which they own about a third”at 10:25

  • Dan Nathan · RiskReversal MediaBullish

Alibaba looks interesting after a washed-out selloff, helped by its competitive AI model.

He calls BABA pretty interesting but maybe a little washed out. The weak Chinese consumer is a drag, and China may need to support it. The AI tailwind offsets that. Alibaba has a model that performs fairly well against a couple of the big Chinese models and is catching up to some US models. Its low-cost structure lets it take models global. He expects a race to the bottom on pricing, which may mean something different for Kimi and Qwen.

“I think BABA is probably pretty interesting here. Maybe a little washed out... They have a model that's actually performing fairly well against a couple of the big ones in China, but also catching up on some of the ones here.”at 41:57
