Waymo is far ahead of Tesla in robotaxi, with about seven times Tesla's weekly miles.
Chiolan says Waymo is clearly the leader in US robotaxis. It does about seven times Tesla's weekly miles. It operates in 15 American cities and completes about 500,000 paid rides a week. Chiolan notes that no Chinese company does as many paid rides, so US commercialization leads globally. He presents these operating metrics as the evidence for Waymo's lead.
“Currently, Waymo does about seven times the amount of miles that Tesla does weekly. They're in 15 American cities. They're doing 500,000 paid rides weekly.”at 22:18

Waymo is doing well, with strong accidents-per-mile results in a tightly mapped city.
Taylor has ridden in a Waymo. He credits its focus on a single fully mapped city with reducing edge cases. He says statistically it seems to be doing well on accidents per mile driven. He hedges that he is unsure whether it is better than a human driver yet.
“it seems like statistically, they're doing well as far as, like, accidents per mile driven, that kind of stuff.”at 42:55
Andreas Steno · Steno ResearchBullish
Waymo's autonomous miles doubled in six months; he calls it a true exponential case.
Robotaxi operators already have millions of hours of real-world driving data, and Waymo has been on the road for a long time. Its driven autonomous miles have doubled over the past six months, which Steno calls a true exponential case. That data is the reason autonomous vehicles are progressing faster than humanoid robots.
“We've had Waymo's on the road for a long while, and they've just doubled their ... driven autonomous miles over the past six months or something like that. It's a true exponential case by now.”at 15:51

Waymo is a miraculous company; he has long been bullish on it and on Google.
He has been bullish on Waymo, and therefore Google, for a long time and calls it a miraculous company. He thinks New York's effort to exclude it or avoid regulating it is ridiculous, and he views robotaxis as great.
“I've been bullish on Waymo for a long time, which means I've been bullish on Google for a long time. I think Waymo is a miraculous company.”at 1:08:07

Jonathan Boyar · Boyar Value GroupBearish
Waymo is a formidable competitor but has a long way to go to match Uber's ride volume and peak capacity.
Boyar says Waymo has done a fantastic job and is a formidable competitor. However, it would have to roughly double its rides every year for seven or eight years to reach Uber's current scale. Peak-hour demand (about 7-10am and 4-7pm, plus some weekend times) requires many more cars than off-peak, and at around $100,000 per vehicle, the idle capacity is uneconomic for a standalone owner, especially in suburban and rural areas. Waymo's latest funding round valued it close to Uber, which Boyar takes as a sign of how much it still has to prove.
“Waymo would have to, I think double the amount of rides every year for the next seven or eight years to get to where Uber is today. And Uber is growing. So Waymo is a long way to go.”at 51:19
