  • Malcolm Ethridge · Capital Area Planning GroupBullish

Qualcomm is undervalued: non-handset growth is accelerating while the market still anchors to handset decline.

Malcolm bought Qualcomm after the selloff. Analysts anchor to a 26% handset decline, but Qualcomm guides to 60% growth in non-handset revenue over the next year. Automotive grew about 89% year over year in the quarter just reported. He says handsets are falling while the rest of the business rises, and that it's a show-me story. The stock is down about 20% in the last month and 40% from its 52-week highs, so he sees a chance to start a position.

“the analyst community is anchoring to that 26% decline in handset growth... but they're also guiding for 60% growth over this... Over the next year in non handset revenue.”at 33:09

  • Sarat Sethi · Douglas C. Lane & AssociatesBullish

Qualcomm is cheap at 12.5 times forward earnings, with a strong balance sheet, dividend and diversified earnings.

Sarat says Qualcomm trades at 12.5 times forward earnings, with a great balance sheet and a dividend. Apple is out of the picture, so the company no longer depends on that partnership. Automotive, connected devices and other semiconductor growth diversify its earnings beyond data centers. He sees the selloff in semiconductors as an opportunity to buy a company with real earnings, but says it may take patience.

“It's trading at 12 and a half times earnings, forward earnings... It's got a dividend... Apple is out of the picture... the opportunity to buy something like a Qualcomm today that has real earnings and diversified earnings base.”at 34:29

  • Josh Brown · Ritholtz Wealth ManagementUncertain

Qualcomm's pivot away from handsets is hard, but UPS's comeback shows a dependent business can reinvent itself.

Josh says it is very hard to make the pivot Qualcomm is attempting. He uses UPS as an example: after relying on Amazon for unit growth for a decade, UPS weaned itself off Amazon, reinvented its business toward high-end and international deliveries, and the stock has recovered after a few years. He suggests Qualcomm might need patience and could pull it off, but the outcome is uncertain.

“It's very hard to make this pivot that Qualcomm's trying to make, but there are examples of it working.”at 35:16

  • Courtney Garcia · Payne Capital ManagementBullish

Qualcomm's diversification away from handsets is not yet priced in; buy on weakness, not a chase.

Garcia says investors want to see diversification away from handsets into automotive, infrastructure and AI data centers, but aren't believing it yet. So the diversification isn't priced in. If she believes the long-term shift will happen, she would buy weakness this week, but not chase the stock here.

“We need to see whether it's automotive, it's infrastructure, it's the AI data center space... investors aren't believing it yet... So I wouldn't be chasing it here. I would be a buyer on this week.”at 21:10

  • Steve Grasso · Grasso Global Inc.Bullish

Qualcomm already re-rated without handsets; the selloff is a buying opportunity.

Grasso points out that automotive is up 89% and IoT is less so, but together they're about 40% of revenue. He argues the stock has already re-rated without the phone business. He is a buyer on weakness even after the drop of roughly 8-9%.

“IoT is not up as much. But together they're 40% of revenues. It's already re rated without the phone business... I'd be a buyer on weakness.”at 21:34

  • Jay Goldberg · Seaport Research PartnersBearish

Qualcomm's data center AI push is not yet credible; the market shouldn't believe its AI story.

Qualcomm's data center revenue guidance of about $650 million for the December quarter, from its first AI product with Amazon, is roughly in line with consensus and barely offsets declines in the slowing smartphone business, so there was no upside to the new business. Goldberg thinks the Amazon win is a capacity deal and small wins that will not give the business staying power. He says this is Qualcomm's third attempt at the data center, after two that did not go well, so it has a lot to prove before investors credit it. He acknowledges that AI sales cycles take years and deserve time, but he lacks faith in the business's sustainability and says the street is not ready to believe the AI story.

“I don't think the street is ready to believe their AI story yet.”at 38:00

  • Jay Goldberg · Seaport Research PartnersBearish

Qualcomm's core smartphone chip business faces share loss and a worse downturn next year.

Smartphones are still the vast majority of Qualcomm's business, and Goldberg worries management is taking its eye off that core. Qualcomm's customers are diversifying away from it: all five of the top five handset makers design their own application processors that compete with Qualcomm, and three of the top five make their own modems, the core of Qualcomm's business. He expects the smartphone business to get much worse next year because of weak consumer demand, and sees a real risk of share loss on top of that. He thinks Qualcomm has good engineering talent but is distracted by other bets.

“smartphone business is gonna get much worse next year just on consumer demand, plus there's this risk of Qualcomm share loss.”at 39:59

  • Jordi Visser · Visser LabsBullish

Qualcomm should benefit as AI spreads into edge devices across homes and cars.

Visser says semiconductors have been consolidating for six to seven months after strong gains, and he recommends moving into names like Qualcomm and AMD that benefit from edge devices. He argues AI will be installed in every product, including ovens, phones, and cars, so edge-device chipmakers should benefit as AI becomes part of everyday life.

“you can start to move into some things like Qualcomm and AMD, things that are gonna benefit from edge devices because it's gonna be in your oven or your stove. It's gonna be in your telephone at home. It's gonna be in your car.”at 55:58
