FICO has lost its mortgage scoring monopoly within a year and needs new management.
For the first time in company history except the financial crisis and Covid, FICO declined to give fiscal 2026 guidance, citing competitive pressure from VantageScore amid changes in mortgage scoring. Management said it is working on multiple pricing programs to retain volume. Eisman sees a company that lost its monopoly in less than a year, which he finds embarrassing and says needs new management.
“In my view this is a company that has lost its precious monopoly in less than a year. That is embarrassing and FICO needs new management desperately.”at 26:46

Covered his FICO short; bad news is largely out, though a counter-rally is possible.
Eisman had been short FICO for a while. The stock was down 60% for the year. He still thinks more bad news could come. But a stock that has fallen that far that fast can rally on the slightest good news, and much of the bad news is already out. He says the better part of valor is to cover, so he did.
“I think more bad news could still occur. However, when the stock goes down that much that quickly, the slightest good news can cause a counter rally.”at 19:39

Fair Isaac's credit-scoring monopoly vanished in one summer as Rocket and United moved to VantageScore after its price hikes.
FICO's monopoly was ripped away in a single summer as Rocket and United shifted to VantageScore, which Rocket says qualifies more buyers and saves borrowers about $1,600 per loan. After FICO raised its price from 60 cents to as much as $10, the advantage vanished 'overnight' like an earthquake. Analysts have cut the stock and securities-fraud investigations are probing whether management misled on regulatory risk.
“This monopoly was ripped away from Fair Isaac in the span of the summer of twenty twenty six.”at 34:54

Fair Isaac is down 60% as VantageScore erodes its pricing power, but fundamentals haven't deteriorated; he won't call it a buy.
FICO was the best-performing S&P 500 stock since 1990 as of November 2024 but is now down about 60% and the worst S&P stock this year. A federal housing regulator move let VantageScore (owned by the three credit bureaus) be used, and Rocket went from 0 to 41% and United from 0 to 26% usage within months. FICO's pricing power is gone, yet fundamentals haven't deteriorated (guidance raised, heavy buybacks), so he won't call the stock a buy and says no one knows the right valuation for the new company.
“It's very unusual to see a stock down 60% with little fundamental deterioration... I'm not saying the stock is buying. Have no idea.”at 35:21

FICO is losing its mortgage monopoly after 1600% price hikes; he calls it a company in crisis.
FICO's stock fell over 25% in a day after FHFA head Bill Pulte combined the LLPA grids for FICO and VantageScore, removing VantageScore's 20 basis-point haircut and giving it a competitive advantage. Rocket Mortgage then moved to VantageScore. Eisman's short thesis was that FICO risked losing its mortgage monopoly; it raised prices about 1600% over five years and angered the mortgage ecosystem. He says losing a monopoly this way is about as bad as it gets for a company, the stock is down over 60% year to date, and CEO William Lansing (in the role since 2012) should be fired because the board is not doing its job.
“Losing a monopoly because of bad strategic decisions is as bad a result for a company as imaginable. The strategic mistake was to be greedy and to raise prices by an insane amount. FICO has lost its monopoly in less than a year.”at 4:27
