  • Guy Adami · CNBCBullish

Chipotle's comps beat expectations and the stock may rally further, though it is not out of the woods.

Adami attributes the share gain to a relief rally on same-store sales of 2.1%, which beat expectations. The stock traded down to its June low and seemed to hold there. He says the company is not out of the woods on macro pressures, but the comp beat and reaffirmed guidance may be enough to produce more upside in the stock.

“It's a relief rally off the comps, which at 2.1% were better than expected. We traded down to the June low, seemingly held. They're not out of the woods, but it might be enough to get a little more of a rally in CMG.”at 45:12

  • Tim Seymour · Seymour Asset ManagementBullish

Chipotle has been more resilient than peers, valuation is reasonable, and the chart is bottoming.

Seymour says the company's management has been transparent about the consumer and the macro backdrop, and Chipotle has been more resilient than its restaurant peers. He argues valuation is not that difficult, and the stock chart has started to find a bottoming range, which he finds interesting.

“We know their consumer and what's been going on and they actually have been a lot more resilient than the peers... Valuation, not that difficult here.”at 45:33

  • Jim Cramer · CNBCBullish

Chipotle's same-store sales beat expectations, a positive sign for restaurant demand despite margin pressure.

Same-store sales rose 2.1%, better than investors expected, and both customer visits and average check increased. That was the third straight quarter of positive transaction growth, in a difficult restaurant environment. Earnings came in 2 cents short and restaurant margins fell slightly short. Cramer did not like the margin reversion to 23.3% from 25.2% last quarter, but he said same-store sales are the most important metric and he was encouraged by them. He found the CEO's explanation of market-level performance dispositive on the category concern.

“Same store sales rose 2.1%. ... I like that. It's better than expected. ... That makes three consecutive quarters of positive transaction growth.”at 13:03

  • Marta Norton · EmpowerBearish

Chipotle is lagging as a pricier fast-food name in a consumer that is weaker than spending implies.

Norton says restaurant performance has become bifurcated this year. Affordable sit-down restaurants are doing well, while Chipotle is more expensive for a fast-food brand and is not doing as well. She sees this as reflecting a consumer that is less strong than retail spending data suggests, which traces back to wages and inflation. Chipotle's price increases could help longer term, but the consumer is in a tricky spot.

“I think when you look at some of these more affordable sit down restaurants, they're doing great. Some of these other companies, I would consider Chipotle a bit more expensive on the fast food front, and it's not doing as well.”at 29:53

  • Guy Adami · CNBCBearish

Chipotle has shown eight or nine quarters of slowing growth, which is a problem.

Adami says Chipotle has been slowing for the last eight or nine quarters, which is a problem. He thinks the quarter is setting up for another disappointment, and the analyst downgrades a week ahead of earnings suggest a defensive move. Chipotle is raising prices in about 8% to 9% of its stores every month, which may not be accepted by a consumer facing rising costs. Adami sees some valuation support near June 2022 levels.

“We're on the other side of growth. We've seen it now for the last eight or nine quarters. That's a problem.”at 30:41

  • Karen Finerman · Metropolitan Capital AdvisorsBearish

Pre-earnings analyst downgrades suggest Chipotle is lowering expectations before a likely miss.

Finerman argues that when analysts turn negative before earnings, the company may already know it will miss and wants expectations lowered. That behavior would give her pause. Even though the valuation is not demanding, she would rather buy the stock higher on an upswing than try to pick the bottom.

“If you're the company and you know you're gonna miss, you want them out there lowering. You want to lower expectations.”at 31:57
