Bank of America faces deposit flight and commercial real estate losses from higher rates, and he sees shorts building against it.

The bank holds commercial real estate loans made at 2-3% that could refinance at 7-10%, and has about $300B of deposits paying zero. He says AI assistants from Meta will show savers that they can earn around 4% in Treasuries. That should move about $150B out of Bank of America over the next year, maybe five years, which would hit a large part of its profits. He says many players are already shorting the stock.

“they're sitting on all that commercial real estate... A 150,000,000,000 is gonna leave Bank of America over the next year, year, maybe five years, and that's a huge juicy part of their profits.”at 13:06

Bank of America mismanaged its bond book and is leaving money on the table, so earnings should be higher.

Bank of America has not restructured its bond book even today, so it carries large unrealized losses on low-coupon securities, and the wider industry still has roughly $500 billion of total securities losses. Whalen says the bank should be earning far more, that management mismanaged the balance sheet and does not understand duration, and that peers like Citi, JPMorgan, Wells Fargo and American Express handled it better. He frames this as an earnings problem and says he is not worried about deposits, because Bank of America is his own bank.

“But for some reason, the folks at Bank of America were kinda brain dead as usual. They're my bank, by the way. And they have constantly mismanaged that institution.”at 4:20

Bank of America's stall since August suggests the banking cycle is later than the market realizes.

Guy notes Bank of America hit an all-time high around $65 in August. Since then, after Brian Moynihan's unusual comments, the stock has not seen an uptick. Banks are cyclical, and the way the group has traded since mid to late August suggests the cycle may be further along than the market thinks. He still likes Citi and banks in general, provided there is no massive credit cycle.

“Bank of America made its all time high in August... if you look at the way they've traded since, you know, mid to late August, it's suggesting that maybe we're a lot later cycle than the market realizes.”at 23:50

Bank of America's 2020–21 Treasury-heavy held-to-maturity book is a visible weakness that has hit the stock.

Dan points to Bank of America's held-to-maturity book. The bank loaded up on Treasuries in 2020 and 2021, and he says the losses from that positioning have played out. He says that one stuck out like a sore thumb, and that the stock has reacted to it over the last few months.

“we've known this story about their held to maturity book. Right? They were loading up on treasuries. This is back in 2020 and 2021, and you see how things have gone.”at 25:05

Bank of America is underperforming on returns and holding low-yield assets; its board needs to act.

Whalen says Bank of America ranks at the bottom of the top seven US depositories on return on assets, and that there is no excuse for this. He says the board needs to make a change and install an operator to run the institution. He also cites a $1.5 billion OCC anti-money-laundering fine, the largest the OCC has ever imposed. On the balance sheet, he says the bank earns only about one point more on its assets than it pays on funding, before operating costs. It is still holding 2% COVID-era mortgages whose coupons sit below its cost of funds. He says he would not short the bank, since it is his own bank, but he is critical of management.

“But the board needs to make a change. We need an operator running that institution. There is no excuse for having them at the bottom of the top seven depositories in terms of return on assets.”at 25:37

Bank of America's failure to manage duration has cost shareholders billions in lost earnings.

Whalen says Bank of America has not restructured its securities book. As the bond market backs up, its older low-coupon, high-duration holdings fall in price. He argues that management's failure to manage duration has cost Schwab and Bank of America shareholders billions, and that the peers that got duration right, such as Citi and JPMorgan, show the mistake was avoidable.

“If you sat down and calculated how much the shareholders of Schwab and Bank of America have missed because management couldn't figure out duration, it's billions and billions of dollars.”at 6:24
