Walmart's yield fell to 1.5% after a 60% rally, so Bahnsen sold it on valuation.
Walmart rose about 60% in one year, pushing its dividend yield from a 3.5% historical average to 1.5%, roughly the S&P 500 level. Bahnsen says the company did nothing wrong, but he sold it because the valuation no longer offered the expected return he wanted.
“Walmart went public the year before I was born and grew the dividend every year of my life. They didn't do anything wrong. They just happened to go up 60% in one year in stock price.”at 15:00

Walmart is taking the opposite approach to Amazon by welcoming AI shopping agents, which is smart.
Many companies are blocking agentic chatbots from crawling their sites or transacting, and Amazon has said its shopping experience works fine without a helper. Walmart is going the other direction and will take the ecommerce that AI agents such as Instinct or Muse send its way. Josh calls this 'zigging while Amazon's zagged' and says Walmart 'doesn't give a shit' about the agents' traffic, implying Walmart is positioned well for agent-driven commerce. The support is brief and mostly contrastive, so the view is lightly evidenced.
“Walmart is going in the other direction from Amazon. ... And, they'll take all the ecommerce you wanna send their way with Instinct or Muse. They don't give a shit. Bring it. We'll do it.”at 37:27

Walmart has technical strength and margin expansion from membership fees; Sam's Club and grocery reach take share from Amazon.
Walmart has moved above its 200-day moving average, which Bill reads as technical strength. About 30% of its orders are same-day, and it charges elevated membership fees, which should expand margins. Sam's Club is a Costco competitor that trades at a cheaper multiple than Costco, and Walmart reaches 94% of the US population within a three-hour window. Bill sees Walmart taking share from Amazon's core business, so he sees upside. He added the stock around Labor Day and has been adding since.
“But last week, it got above its two hundred day moving average. We like the technical strength. ... The Sam's Club unit is definitely a Costco competitor that you're getting as an option that trades at a cheaper multiple than Costco, but they reached 94% of The US population in the three hour window.”at 40:30

Walmart's August earnings showed revenue growth and benefit from the K-shaped consumer, driving recovery.
Walmart needed its August 20 earnings to show that fundamental opportunity remained, including revenue growth and the ability to benefit from a K-shaped economy with shoppers visiting stores. It delivered on that, which is why the stock has bounced from a weak level it was struggling at going into the report. The recovery is real but modest.
“Walmart's had a nice recovery. They reported August 20, and they really needed in that earnings report to show investors that there still was fundamental opportunity, ... the ability to benefit from this k shaped economy going in and visiting the store. They did exactly that.”at 41:12

Walmart filed a 2023 patent for price changes based on shoppers' purchases, such as tuna raising mayo prices.
Owens says Walmart filed a 2023 patent for scan-and-go technology connected to electronic shelf labels. The system tracks what a shopper is already buying and changes prices on other items. The patent's own example is tuna fish in the cart leading to a higher price on mayonnaise. Walmart says it is not using the patent, but Owens notes it built the technology and filed for it. The patent runs through 2039, and Walmart says it will not renew it then. Owens says that does not give her much comfort. She also cites a Walmart patent for using imagery to detect whether a car's suspension has changed as a shopper leaves the store, as evidence of the data companies are building to price against shoppers.
“They filed for a 2023 patent that did exactly what you described, used scan and go technology connected to electronic shelf labels to track what you were already buying, say tuna fish.”at 16:33

Walmart is shorted on valuation, weak growth prospects and overdone investor enthusiasm.
The fund has been short Walmart because it thinks the stock's valuation and growth prospects are overdone. He points to heavy competition in grocery from Costco on one side, Walmart on the other and eBay as well. The thesis rests on valuation and enthusiasm more than on specific earnings numbers.
“we've been short Walmart on valuation and growth prospects and an overdone enthusiasm.”at 50:42
