Bill Nygren · Harris Associates (Oakmark Funds)Bullish
GM's aggressive buybacks and six-times P/E make it cheap, with EPS growing even on flat earnings.
Nygren credits GM's new CFO, Paul Jacobson, with reorienting how free cash flow is used after years of diversifying into businesses where the company had no right to win. GM has cut about 40% of its share base in four years and announced another buyback of more than 25% of the company, expected to be completed in two years. Holders' ownership rises without buying shares. If GM had flat earnings for two or three years, EPS would still rise about 35%. The stock is expected to earn about $15 next year and sells for under $90, or about six times earnings.
“They've been buying back stock aggressively. In the past four years, they've taken out about 40% of the share base... the stock, it's supposed to earn about $15 next year, sells for less than $90 a share.”at 12:31

Tim Seymour · Seymour Asset ManagementBullish
GM should be valued as a well-run ICE and OEM company, not an EV play; it has never generated more free cash flow.
Seymour says GM, unlike Boeing, has never generated more free cash flow. He says the company just reported numbers that got it knocked down, but EBITDA came in close to $3 billion. He sticks to valuation and wants GM treated as a company that has never been run better, getting credit for its OEM and ICE business rather than as an EV story.
“unlike Boeing, has never generated more free cash flow. This company, they just had numbers. They got knocked down on the numbers... I want them to be treated by... Like a company that's never been run better.”at 29:07

Courtney Garcia · Payne Capital ManagementBullish
General Motors is a rate-sensitive cyclical name hit hard and worth adding for near-term upside.
Courtney is leaning in and adding GM back to her models. She wants industrials, small caps and anything more interest-rate sensitive that has been hit harder, because she sees those as areas of opportunity. She thinks other areas are better buys in the short term, and GM's earnings profile supports adding it.
“I'm also leaning in and again changing some models, actually adding back in a GM, Home Depot, which we've talked about, even a Delta Airlines.”at 13:07

Chris Grisanti · MAI Capital ManagementBullish
GM is a cheap, shrinking company at six times earnings, with big buybacks supporting the stock.
GM's shares fell about 6-8% because it did not raise guidance despite strong quarters. Grisanti points to a $20 billion buyback, which he compares to NVIDIA announcing a $2 trillion repurchase, buying back about a third of the company. He says the company has already bought back about 40% of itself. Earnings are solid rather than magnificent, and he loves the investment at six times earnings.
“This is a disappearing company. The earnings are solid. They're not magnificent, but they're solid. I love the investment at six times earnings.”at 12:10

Sarat Sethi · Douglas C. Lane & AssociatesUncertain
GM is a cyclical auto company; oil-driven car sales slowdown and union pressure are real risks despite buybacks.
Sethi says he was wrong to sell GM earlier, since he had expected the consumer to weaken, but consumers are still buying cars. He credits GM with good cash flow, buybacks and effective management through tariffs. He stresses that autos are hard businesses with no recurring revenue, that unions will eventually push for a bigger share of profits, and that a sustained oil price rise, for example a $25 increase, would drive car sales lower. He calls the stock a holding that moves within a band rather than a clear long-term winner, and describes its competitive position as strong but contested.
“Brian, if oil goes up $25 from now, you know car sales are gonna start coming down.”at 43:46

Jim Cramer · CNBCBullish
GM is a great company whose business is holding up, so its stock pullback from higher rates looks overdone.
GM posted an excellent quarter in late July and the stock hit record highs. Since then, higher oil prices and rising interest rates have made auto loans more expensive, and the stock has given back most of its gains for the year. Cramer says the business is still holding up well, pointing to new heavy-duty truck models and a growing digital and services business. He sees the pullback as tied to rates rather than to the company's operations.
“Like I said, this is a great company. They've been doing very well... And, frankly, business seems to be holding up a lot, I think, pretty well.”at 13:23

Tim Seymour · Seymour Asset ManagementBullish
GM is cheap at under six times earnings, pays a dividend, and keeps getting more profitable.
Tim says Ford and GM are trading very well given what is happening in industrials, and new-car sales have been resilient for months. GM trades at a probably low-five P/E, pays a dividend, and has done a lot to become more profitable. He says he has held GM for a long time, though Karen Finerman says she is no longer in it.
“Gets back to GM is a company that less than six times, it's probably low five PE handle and is paying a dividend and has done a lot of great things to become more profitable. That's where I've been for a long time.”at 39:05
