P&G's strong quarter and new CEO make it a quality staples name worth owning again.

P&G had one of its best quarters in years, beating on top and bottom lines with 4% organic growth against roughly 2.5% expected. The stock rose more than 11% as investors returned to safe staples names. Cramer says it has an iconic brand portfolio (Tide, Pampers, Gillette, Crest) and a quality operator in new CEO Shailesh Jejurikar. The trust struggled with P&G during the period of elevated inflation and sold most of its position in 2024 before fully exiting this year. He says he still likes the company, though he prefers Kimberly-Clark now for valuation and yield.

“Last week, P and G had one of its best quarters in ages, top and bottom line beating 4% organic growth. Wall Street was only looking for 2.5.”at 27:09

Procter & Gamble is a recession stock whose shares rally on weak economic data, often through sector rotation.

Cramer argues Procter & Gamble, like the consumer packaged goods sector, is a recession stock because its earnings tend to hold up in a slowing economy. As a result its stock roars when economic data is weak. He warns that sector rotation into CPG stocks can drive gains that have nothing to do with the company's business, so a rally can be mistaken for proof of a good fundamental call. His point is that investors should understand why a stock is moving.

“Procter, like all the consumer packaged goods place, is a recession stock. Because its earnings tend to hold up during a slowing economy, its stock roars when we get lousy economic data.”at 40:35

Procter & Gamble is an extreme double top and not cheap; avoid buying staples here.

Grasso says none of the staples names are cheap and that you should not chase them here. He reads Procter & Gamble's chart back to February 2026 as a real extreme double top. He argues the staples rally is a flight to yield that will not last, so he would not buy them now.

“I don't think you want to chase any staples companies here. None of them are cheap... When you look at Procter... this is a real extreme case of double top... So I wouldn't be buying these names now.”at 20:43

  • Tim Seymour · Seymour Asset ManagementNeutral

Procter's earnings beat is not enough for him to buy; he prefers Unilever's multiple.

Procter & Gamble beat with organic growth of about 4% against consensus near 2.3%, and gross margin improved. Seymour still says he will not buy the stock on this news. He is wary of its valuation and says Unilever's health-and-beauty mix deserves a higher multiple. Melissa Lee adds that the stock trades above Alphabet's multiple and that valuation concerns are likely.

“I'm not going out to buy Procter tomorrow based upon this, especially if anything, like Unilever, what I like about what they did is they moved more into health and beauty.”at 40:23

Procter & Gamble is a best-of-breed long-term buy: industry leader, strong balance sheet, dividend growth.

Cramer recommends Procter & Gamble as the best-of-breed alternative to low-quality stocks. He says it may not offer short-term excitement, but it is a long-term story investors can count on. His support is that it is an industry leader with a great balance sheet, a long history of dividend increases, and some of the best brands in the world.

“P and G might not give you any short term pyrotechnics, but it's a kind of long term story that you can count on. It's an industry leader with a great balance sheet, long history of dividend boost, and the best brands on earth.”at 4:51
